terajk: Toph pointing and laughing. TEXT: Fail (toph: fail!)
I never really understood fannish hate-ons for characters who get in the way of pet ships. I tend to have the opposite problem, which is fleets of ships crashing into each other ("When are Katara and Toph dating if Katara is with Aang and Mai and Zuko? Can Mai/Toph or Katara/Mai/Toph be a thing? And when are Toph and June dating, because they totally are, if it's the future?").

But I'm watching/reading Tenchi Muyo! and I have this problem with Tenchi, see.

It's not that he gets in the way of ships I like. It's not even that he got this god-mode superpower out of no freaking where. (Okay, it was not so much "nowhere" as...I dunno. But I think all the ladies are after Tenchi because he is the most powerful god in the universe? Or something?) It's just that...I wish Tenchi were a lady.

Which, I mean, this is a harem series where the target audience is straight dudes! (See: a bunch of super-powerful and hot ladies are romancing a perfectly average dude who is actually THE MOST POWERFUL BEING IN THE UNIVERSE, maybe.) And I can't fault it for being what it is. But I did try removing Tenchi entirely in my head and replaced him with Mihoshi (naw), and then I wondered what would happen if she were always-a-cis-woman (enh), and then I was like: "What if Tenchi were a trans woman?" and then I was like: "OMFG YESSSSSSS."

And that fixed everything, ever.

ETA: MtF!Tenchi's name is Yumi (祐美), partly because she was adamant that her name have "useful" or "necessary" or "helpful" in it.
