So I finally found the song for the Toph & Teo vid I wanna do for [community profile] cripbigbang! (It’s Beyonce’s “I Was Here.”)

I’m still nervous that it won’t have enough to do with the fic I’m complementing, but the song is about wanting to make a mark on the world and the fic involves Toph and Teo going around the world and making it a more accessible place.

Also, it’s a slow and possibly haunting tune (oh no not another one. At least I'm planning a Child's Play-series vid to a Fred Penner song? Hush.) And I love how in the fic spoilers for the fic ) And the song being kind of sad-sounding will help me focus on her Disability Superpower as a TVTropes-style deconstruction of the trope. (As in, she learned that needing help is toxic and bad and also that being able to do things better than most people is what makes her valuable.)

Of course, there are problems making a 4-minute Toph and Teo vid--like how there just aren't a lot of scenes of Teo. Also, LOTS of Toph vids use the same clips of her fighting in "The Blind Bandit," and I'd like to avoid those. But they're awesome!

Also I'm sure clips from Legend of Korra would be fabulous, but I'm way behind on Korra.

I signed up as an artist for [community profile] cripbigbang, a Big Bang featuring characters with canonical/semi-canonical disabilities. And the fic I claimed is about Toph and Teo having adventures and rebuilding the world, while making it more accessible for everybody. (Yeah, I snapped it up in, like, five seconds. Obviously.)

Back when I'd originally signed up, I was thinking of writing meta. But I really, really like making vids! And, bonus, I don't have the hangups about it that I have about writing things. (Also, double bonus, there's no Kyuubey this time around, who is a huge pain to vid because they almost never move.)

But! Fanvids need to be at least three minutes long! Also I haven't found a song yet, although I'm getting closer. (I started with members of Krip Hop Nation--a collective of hip-hop artists with disabilities--and so far I've found songs with awesome lyrics that are slower/gentler than I want and songs with excellent beats/pacing and lyrics that aren't very useful. BUT I WILL GET THERE.)

I mean, a song appropriate for adventuring/rebuilding/breaking stuff and deconstructing the Inspirational Cripple(tm) and Disability Superpower tropes isn't too much to ask for, is it?

The Awesome Ladies Podfic Anthology III is out! And [archiveofourown.org profile] argentumlupine podficced Friends Don't Let Friends Kick Their Butts (Avatar: The Last Airbender, Toph & Katara) and it is FABULOUS!

There are tons of fandoms and awesome ladies represented (including [archiveofourown.org profile] white_asher's Toph/Iroh futurefic First, which I love)

Mai: What if we send Azula on an important or annoying mission, where she wouldn't be tempted to take over the world, but she'd probably get killed or thrown in prison for life? It's a win for almost everybody!

Me: Are you sure?

Mai: *ponders* Yes.

This started as a comment on [personal profile] sholio's post about part 3 of The Promise. (spoilers). It ended up...this.

Spoilers for Avatar: The Last Airbender )

Man, I wrote a lot of words about this. I'd better stop now.

Remember how months ago I was thinking of writing something about disability in Avatar: The Last Airbender? Well I was writing up this informal but long thing just now, when the Spinning Beach Ball of Death came and ate it.

All of it.

Signups are open for [community profile] femslash12, operation: Azula, Katara and Toph get all the babes the multifandom femslash fic exchange/athon! I'm still fiddling with my signup. Come play!

I've never done this exchange before, and am really super nervous, as my sexual orientation is "asexual with a romantic preference for ladies that I have limited experience with in real life." The kinds of things I have strong feelings for aren't necessarily romantic (hand-holding! sharing a bed! sharing food! cuddles!--*will edit signup to offer Aoi Hana after posting this, as I can't believe I FORGOT*), and in my writing I never know if I've shipped people or not. Also, while I write all kinds of kinky fic, I write porn only slightly better than I write maps. D:

After a re-read of Azumanga Daioh I find myself craving (Kagura)&/Osaka&/Tomo. Or Tomo roleplaying as Fujiko Mine. Which is kind of silly, as my memories of Lupin III are vague as hell and almost none of them involve Fujiko except as a name Lupin mentioned a lot. (Luckily, Fujiko has her own anime now!)

Also, for anyone so inclined, my AIM chat name is terajk (boring, I know)

This was supposed to be for my "penance and punishment" square. Uh.

....Maka and Katara would have a really fun....interaction, I guess? (Okay, okay, I would ship them.*)

They're both badass! They're both insecure about their own abilities at some point in time and work through it! (Katara being jealous/frustrated that Aang learns waterbending moves so easily; Maka feeling like she's not as strong as Black*Star or Kid) and angry with their fathers! They both get a lot of fandom hate/dislike for being female protagonists teenage girls angry sometimes as imperfect as the fandom darlings bitches! I am insecure about writing them both!

Actually, one reason I have trouble writing them both is because of the hate they get. Because I love that they get angry and frustrated and make mistakes! (And tbh, I can't think of any characters who never make mistakes, ever--hell, even local Joan Watson Elementary spoilers ) And I'm like: "But how do I write them doing these things--which darling dudes do, too, btw--without them looking like Bad People? And then I chicken out.

*And I would ship them with/have them talk to Hermione Granger from Harry Potter.

I finally got around to doing the "top ten works by hit count on AO3" meme! I didn't do it last year.

Y'ALL! The lovely [personal profile] lizcommotion  sent me a package FULL of Ranma 1/2 goodies, because she is moving AWESOME! So now I have an adorable P-chan pin, a sparkly trading card and, like, FOUR soundtrack CDs! They'll come in handy for the [livejournal.com profile] queer_fest fic, let me tell you. In fact, I've already put the CDs to good use: I listened to them while playing the game I'm supposed to be reviewing, and while writing ridiculous AtLA/Ranma 1/2 crossover drabbles. And here they are!

Writing the story of the friendship between a sexy cat-monster and an asexual* god of death is actually really hard. (I mean, they have SO MANY COMMON INTERESTS.) I can't imagine it working without some degree of snark on both sides; the cat-monster's snark is gentler/ more playful than anyone else's in the cast would be, but I keep being afraid of breaking her.

ETA: While I usually don't associate songs with specific characters, their friendship has a song!

(I'd call this a "trope" but I've only noticed it twice so far. I may not be looking in the right place.)

I've seen this thing in both Avatar: The Last Airbender and Soul Eater, where there are a) several disabled characters, b) themes about the importance of friendship and trust, and c) villains associated with paranoia, because they are Bad.
