I felt so silly! Because I started reading manga and there was AN EXPLOSION of them! They are a TROPE! It is fabulous.

Also, the media with the most representation there are Anime and Manga and Video Games. While I suspect Ranma 1/2 has something to do with it, I think it can't be the only reason. (For one thing, Ranma 1/2 seems to have been really popular and influential in the States, too.) I woud totally read an essay/literature review on the subject, for serious.
