We're getting more and more moved into our new house! Although one day my mom had to work and I had no cable or video games, so I watched lots of Revolutionary Girl Utena as I put books away. This was an excellent use of my time and I have lots of Feelings, which I can only express as "WOAH." I, um, think Anthy is kind of my favorite?
Hey, wait! Here's something I can sort of put into words!
I love the sense that we (the audience) are watching a play, that the characters are performing for us. (Utena's duels take place in an arena; the shadow play girls are putting on literal plays; the silhouettes when, for instance, wee!Utena recounts her past as a fairy tale that begins some of the episodes). My favorite is the feeling of going up an elevator when the Student Council has meetings--there's something disturbingly voyeuristic about it, as if we are complicit in the awful things that happen/these awful things exist for our entertainment. Which I'm sure is supposed to disturb the audience, since Utena is partly a deconstruction of fairy tales.
Have a Tumblr meme!:
Give me a fandom, character or pairing and I will write you a drabble! (Utena prompts are indeed welcome!)
