I have decided that Jarvis is not self-aware, because why would Tony Stark want a robot with free will? (He hardcoded Jarvis's sarcasm in, probably for his own amusement/a sense that someone needed to keep him in line.)

Have you seen IM3? As there is a particular moment in there that indicates to me that whether or not Tony designed JARVIS to be self-aware, it is now.
