Festivids nominations are go!
Sep. 20th, 2013 05:12 pmAw, yeeuh.
AND SOMEONE ALREADY NOMINATED THE CHILD'S PLAY SERIES SO I DON'T HAVE TO. Which gave me the (emotional) freedom to nominate:
Child's Play (1972) I just saw this...last night? (Yay, Amazon Prime!) Beau Bridges is a new gym teacher at a Catholic boys' school where the literature teacher and the Classics teacher are feuding and weird stuff keeps happening. Was based on a play and is very stage-y, so while I would genuinely love a vid for it I feel kind of bad.
Magic (1978) From a novel by William Goldman (yes, the Princess Bride guy). Anthony Hopkins is a struggling magician until he adds a foul-mouthed dummy named Fats to his act. He skyrockets to fame...until weird stuff starts happening. Some critic or other complained that Hopkins's acting is "wooden." (Really, dude?) Recced to me by my parents, who saw it on a date. (They've also seen Motel Hell and maybe even Salo: 120 Days of Sodom, at which point I stopped listening to my mom's complaints about the horrible shit I watch.)
Dolls (1987) Stuart Gordon directed this somewhere between Re-Animator and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids--which explains a lot. During a storm, a bunch of people take refuge in a big, creepy house owned by husband-and-wife dollmakers who may or may not be witches, whose dolls may or may not be elves. It isn't long before weird stuff starts happening. It's a shame this movie is so gory, because there's a magical, fairytale quality about it that would make a great kids' movie. (Unlike Chucky, the dolls love children and are very protective of them. Which sucks for their abusive parents, I guess.) While I've seen people claim that Full Moon Pictures' Puppet Master is a Child's Play knockoff, it has much more in common with Dolls (e.g. the puppets in Puppet Master aren't evil; they just have shitty bosses and are forced to obey them), which the brothers Band were both involved with.
