Title: Butterfly
For:
esmenet
Rating: PG
Fandom: Tomie
Characters: Kawakami Tomie, Matsubara Reiko
Summary: "Pleeease, Reiko-chan?"
Word count: 300 words
Content notes: Mind control/dubious consent
Note: I took some liberties with the timing. Also Reiko.
Tomie didn't drink soda, even when they were children. "It makes you fat," she'd say--usually while Reiko was drinking a melon Ramune. But Tomie did drink Oronamin C on occasion, which wasn't in the vending machine at the arcade, oh no. The closest place to buy some was the convenience store down the street.
"I'll lose my place in line," said Tomie.
"So will I."
"Pleeeease, Reiko-chan?"
"All right, all right," said Reiko. "Give me some money."
"But this is my last hundred yen."
Reiko rolled her eyes and left. When she got back, there wasn't a line anymore--just a blob of people (boys, always boys), like moths crowding a flame. None of them were watching the screen. "You're really good," one of them said.
"I know," said Tomie.
But Reiko knew she'd be even better if these guys weren't here. All the "Great!"s could be "Perfect!!"s if she'd stop the little flourishes: arm movements, tiny spins, flips of her skirt. Nevertheless, her combo meter hit 150. Murmurs and applause from the blob. When the song ended ("Ai yi yi, I'm your little butterfly. Green, black and blue make the colors in the sky"), she stamped her foot and raised her arm. Louder applause this time.
"Play again," one of the guys said.
"If you have money," Tomie answered. He fumbled in his pocket.
Someone shoved him. "Hey! I'll pay!" Reiko would say it was Yamamoto if she didn't know any better.
"Like hell you will!"
"One of you can pay for me," said Tomie, "and the other can pay for my friend here."
"But--"
"No buts. She's my best friend."
"Will you do 'Kung Fu Fighting'?" someone asked.
"I don't take requests," said Tomie.
She was dead within the week.
