Given the time-frames involved, and the relative spaces to cover, I doubt they would have gotten further than the next town, if not merely to the edge of the capitol, before the whole world got turned upside-down.

I doubt it. Like recessional says, they couldn't have gotten far. I personally think they just retreated back to their rooms and decided to wait it out "for Azula's own good".
