I'm making more vids now, so here's a list of all of them.

List of vids under the cut )

First of all, thank you for making me a vid! Festivids has been the highlight of my fannish year 3 years running.

I’m actually the WORST person to make things for. A lot of times I don’t have any specific requests in mind: I just want to see what people will do with the source. So even “guidelines” are hard for me to come up with. Honestly, just make the vid of your heart.

My requests:

All the Boys Love Mandy Lane,
Cabin Fever film series (2002-2014)
Event Horizon
Ghostbusters (2016)
Lights Out (2016)
May (2002)
Re-Animator series (1983-2003)
The Shallows (2016)

Fandom-specific details below the cut! )

If anything I’ve said intimidates you, please don’t worry! I just love all these fandoms and want to see what you do with them. HAVE FUN!

A new world awaits you, so hold on tight! And join the adventure with Rainbow Brite.

notes:

This isn't the first time I've made a horror movie vid to a Rainbow Brite song; I can't promise it'll be the last. (It is the first time I've just thrown the whole source into iMovie without clipping in MPEG Streamclip first.)

This year I made 5 vids in 4 fandoms. If you guess one correctly, I'll make you something special!

The Festivids masterlist

terajk: Franken Stein from Soul Eater, smiling adorably. (stein: hee!)
Title: Fly Creek is a Mighty Fine Town
Fandom: Squirm (1976)
Music: "The Fox" by Nickel Creek
Summary: They never had such a supper in their lives.
Warnings: worms, body horror involving worms, forced kissing, violence, corpses, flashing lights
Length: 2:36

My first thought was to pick JP Simon's Slugs: The Movie for this vid, and maybe I should have. For a movie about worms eating people, Squirm doesn't have a lot of worm-related footage. (Most of it is Useless Love Triangle footage.) But Squirm has a special place in my heart. I first saw it on Mystery Science Theater 3000, where I was so intrigued I kept wanting Mike and the 'bots to shut up so I could watch the movie.

Unfortunately, MPEG Streamclip decided it didn't want to play nice with my copy; it played nicer with the one I downloaded off the Internet, but *that* version was missing the end, for some reason. The end result isn't what I hoped for--I had to cut up a lot of the same footage at different places, because the worms aren't in the movie very much.

But I did it, and it's not a complete disaster.

Title: The House is Rockin'
Fandom: Beetlejuice (1989)
Music: The House is Rockin' by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble
For: [livejournal.com profile] tam_cranver
Length: 2:25
Contains: No standard notes apply.

Beetlejuice is one of my favorite movies--not least of all because it was the best metaphor for my navigational disability I had seen at, like, 9 years old. Which sounds weird when you consider that the movie is about ghosts who want to get a familiy of yuppies out of their house. But see, the ghosts haunt the house because, if they try to leave, they end up in a desert with no landmarks (which also might be on Saturn) full of giant worms that will eat them and make the afterlife beaurocracy start over again.

Even as a kid, I was struck by how, although Adam and Barbara were frustrated by being stuck in their house (they can't clean anything because the vacuum is in the garage), the house still was where they were safest. (Which is ironic, considering that, when they were alive, their realtor kept trying to get them to move because she thought the house was too big for them. Or maybe not ironic at all, since she was pretty obnoxious.)

So when [livejournal.com profile] tam_cranver asked for a vid about Adam and Barbara's frustrations with the afterlife or about Lydia and her relationships with them and her family, I knew that the house was essential to all of those things. I also knew I wanted to focus on all the fun and affection everyone ended up having (especially between Lydia and her ghost friends), so, like, "Two Story House" by George Jones and Tammy Wynette didn't work.

So, basically, this vid is a bunch of things about Beetlejuice that I've wanted to say for 25 years. In dance party form.

Also, I'm very proud of this vid, because I'm used to working in iMovie 6 HD which came out a million years ago, but Mavericks broke it and my new computer is so new I can't put Snow Leopard on it. Long story short, I used iMovie 10 for the first time ever.
terajk: Toph pointing and laughing. TEXT: Fail (toph: fail!)
me: I don't know how to beat this boss. (Goddammit, Bayonetta, why did you have to piss it off?)

me: Obviously the answer is to replay earlier stages, make tons of money, and buy the bigger guns.
terajk: Kyle from Child's Play 2 flipping the bird. (so done with this killer doll's bullshit)
Since Mavericks broke iMovie HD for real and my new computer broke Snow Leopard for real I'm making my Festivids assignment in iMovie 10. Which doesn't let you place clips exactly where you want them if there's nothing behind them so I have to vid IN ORDER.

Teachers: Wow, Halloween III? I love Michael Myers!

Me, who is John Carpenter in this metaphor, I guess: Uh…

Teachers: Wait, why is there robots and evil Druids and Tom Atkins? Oh my god how could you record over this movie, you asshole?

Special education teacher: I, Dr. Loomis, know everything there is to know about Michael Myers, unlike you Miss Strode so stop talking nonsense about evil Druids stealing Stonehenge and accept that Michael is behind everything.

Researchers: ‘Evil Druids’ is basically another word for ‘Irish gangsters.’

Me: You just compared Irish gangsters to a list of things evil Druids do without actually studying real life evil Druids.

My mother: They’re like Irish gangsters.

Some psychologist: Oh, I’ve heard of Irish gangsters!

Me: Except with Stonehenge and human sacrifices.

Some psychologist: Wow, I’m lost. This one Irish gangster I heard speak one time never mentioned anything about Stonehenge.

Researchers, many years too late: Now that we thought to study real life evil Druids we think they’re different from Irish gangsters. LOL, oops.

Me: So, Mom, can we talk about the coming Halloween mask apocalypse because it could kill millions of people.

My mother: I know about the evil Druids and I guess they’re not Irish gangsters because science said so but OH MY GOD I DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT DYING. The Halloween mask apocalypse will work out for the best if you stop wanting me to plan for it in advance.

Me, who is still John Carpenter: Fuck it, I quit this franchise.

terajk: Death the Kid, fists in the air and grinning triumphantly. TEXT: WIN (death the kid: win!)

Dear Festividder,

First off, apologies in advance: I don’t really have prompts for any of these. Music-wise, I’m most familiar with country music and oldies but I have no musical preference and would rather leave that up to you.

Basically, this whole letter is: “Here’s why I like this source. Make the vid of your heart! I’ll love it!”
